Reader Question: On occassion when I’ve gone to the store I’ve seen people roll out a heaping full shopping cart and only paid $11! (or something ridiculously low). I use coupons on a regular basis but I for whatever reason am only able to save a few dollars.

So my question is, how do I use grocery store coupons properly?

Arby

Houston, TX

Answer: One of the things that many “coupon queens” are doing is to choose grocery stores that offer double value for the coupons. Some stores also have double coupon value days that you can take advantage of.

Another “trick” in addition to shopping on double value days (or stores offering double value all the time) is to buy items that you have coupons for but are also on sale.

As you can imagine, stacking savings upon savings can add up very quickly.

You may also want to buy the store brands for items you don’t have coupons for as they are generally a lot more economical than the brand equivalent.
