Reader Question: On occassion when I’ve gone to the store I’ve seen people roll out a heaping full shopping cart and only paid $11! (or something ridiculously low). I use coupons on a regular basis but I for whatever reason am only able to save a few dollars.

So my question is, how do I use grocery store coupons properly?

Arby

Houston, TX

Answer: One of the things that many “coupon queens” are doing is to choose grocery stores that offer double value for the coupons. Some stores also have double coupon value days that you can take advantage of.

Another “trick” in addition to shopping on double value days (or stores offering double value all the time) is to buy items that you have coupons for but are also on sale.

As you can imagine, stacking savings upon savings can add up very quickly.

You may also want to buy the store brands for items you don’t have coupons for as they are generally a lot more economical than the brand equivalent.

Reader Question: On one of the morning shows the other day I heard them talking about how people can save money by going to grocery stores that double coupons, and also how people can go online and print out all kinds of coupons. Being in a rush to get the kids ready I didn’t get a chance to write any of the websites down.

Since we’re on a tight budget and are trying hardest to save, could you help me find some sites that offer free printable grocery coupons?

Answer: There are plenty of options online. Probably the best source is going to Coupons.com.

Another thing you could do to get some free printable grocery coupons (or even have some sent to you) is to actually contact the product manufacturers (by visiting their websites, e.g. Kraft.com, Proctor & Gamble etc.) I have found and recieved a fair amount of coupons from the companies directly so it’s definitely worth visiting their sites.

Lastly, you could also try to join some of the various forums where people trade coupons. Yahoo Groups is a good place to start looking. You could also try to do a search in your favorite search engine and type “trade coupons” (or something similar) and see what comes up.
